City information: Salzburg

Salzburg with over 150.000 inhabitants is the fourth largest city in Austria with an old-town famous for its baroque architecture. In fact, UNESCO declared it a world heritage site back in 1997.

The birthplace of Mozart will surely keep you busy in between the EURO 2008 matches. There are many beautiful hotels to choose from, as well as things to see and do.

The newly rebuilt stadium, the Wals-Siezenheim, is located conveniently next to the Salzburg airport and will be able to hold 30.000 people. It will also be connected to the Salzburg-Munich railway in time for the EURO 2008. A large recreational area with restaurants and playgrounds among other things will also be available in the stadium area.

City information: Vienna

Vienna, the capital of Austria, will host the final match for the EURO 2008. Being the capital, and also he largest city in Austria, there is a tonne of things to do and see here. If you are attending a match here, why not plan your time a little ahead and catch a concert at the Burgtheater to mix up your experience a bit?

The official football stadium in Vienna is called Ernst Happel Stadion. It was just recently renovated and has 50,000 seats. It also hosted the 1994/95 UEFA Champion's League Final and is regarded by the UEFA as a 5 star facility. Location and transport is also excellent as it is located in the Prater, one of Vienna's largest recreation areas.

On qualifying for the EURO 2008

There are 7 qualifying groups for the EURO 2008, groups A through G. 50 nations are qualifying (group A has 8 teams, B through G have 7).

14 nations from the qualifying rounds will go on to the final tournament in cities around Switzerland and Austria. That means the group winners and runners-up.

Since Austria and Switzerland are the host nations, they automatically qualify for the final stage of the EURO 2008 tournament.

The qualifying rounds started on September 2nd 2006 and the last matches will be played on November 21st 2007.

Match locations and information

Ever since the first European football cup was played in France back in 1958, it has been one of the world's most anticipated and talked about sporting events.

For those of you that didn't know yet, the EURO 2008 will take place in different areas of both Austria and Switzerland. Here are the cities that will host matches:

• Salzburg


• Klagenfurt


• Innsbruck

Switzerland

• Bern


• Basel


• Geneva


• Zurich

The qualifying rounds are still being played and when they are all finished and the first round of matches are drawn and we all can make travel and hotel arrangements.

I for one will try and attend as many matches as possible. Football is the sport practiced by the largest amount of people around the world and, to me, football is a part of life. I just pray the prices for the hotels don't shoot through the roof.
